Professors Nicole Hinrichs and Marc Stierand are conducting a three-year research project on how identities of Michelin-starred chefs’ (i.e., the way in which they view themselves) come to be and evolve in the highly institutionalized environment of Haute Cuisine.

This context is of particular interest due to the ‘uniqueness paradox’ it presents; in other words, chefs have to simultaneously fit in and stand out to be successful. We seek to explain how this process influences their self-conception, and subsequently their curiosity, creativity, and ability to innovate.
