At EHL, we are committed to contributing positively to the communities around us, guided by our core values of excellence, family, and learning, as well as a culture of care and responsibility.
We actively support local economic development by engaging with the community and opening our campus and selected services to the public. We partner with non-profit organizations to organize fundraising initiatives and donations, as well as to identify meaningful volunteering opportunities for our members. Our aim is to create opportunities for everyone at EHL to contribute and give back in ways that align with their skills, interests, and personal motivations.
We take pride in ensuring that our employees can give their time and expertise to our community and the causes they care about. Our online volunteering platform allows EHL students and staff to do field work, collect donations, volunteer their skills, and contribute financially to those in need.
Some of our volunteering activities include initiatives such as the participation of our staff football team in a charity tournament, a food and essential items donation with Samedi du Partage, the Student Association WeVolunteers volunteering for the Soup Kitchen in Lausanne or our practical arts lecturers sharing their expertise with staff at L’Union Restaurant.
At EHL, we believe local and sustainable sourcing is essential. By supporting local producers and businesses, we strengthen community ties and contribute to regional economic growth. At the same time, we are actively working to limit our environmental impact by reducing our carbon footprint and fostering a culture of sustainability by encouraging both students and staff to adopt more responsible and eco-conscious practices.
We also follow the Repair, Reuse, and Donate concept to minimize waste and extend the life of campus resources. Whenever possible, furniture, appliances, and equipment no longer in use are donated to local organizations.
For example, classroom furniture was redistributed after renovation works, used student uniforms were donated and upcycled by Démarche into new clothing items, and surplus tableware was sold during the Sustainability Week to support the EHL Foundation for Scholarships and Honorary Loans.
Each year, EHL invites a deserving student from l’École d’Hôtellerie et de Tourisme Paul Dubrule (EHT) in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to experience its Swiss campuses and university-level courses. Erafasyra, a young student from EHT, was chosen for this unique opportunity. Her visit to EHL's Passugg campus captivated her, and a chance encounter with an admissions officer in Lausanne opened the door to a tuition-waiver.
Since its founding, EHL has upheld a culture of giving back. This is reflected in the generosity of our community of alumni, along with individual donors and corporate donors, whose contributions have enabled the establishment of an endowment fund to secure our future philanthropic efforts.
In Lausanne, our eco-conscious site creates a sense of harmony with the natural environment and openness to the local community. It facilitates spontaneous interactions between students, professors, and visitors from many backgrounds, who can access all our facilities.
We launched a catalog of services for the external public, broadening access to our resources and expertise to benefit the wider community.
In 2020, EHL released its first social and environmental report, confirming the start of its journey towards sustainability by publishing a set of commitments approved by the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. The report is now released yearly, covering the actions over the course of the previous year.
There is still a lot to be done, but we are devoted to take on the challenges of today’s society and develop our metrics for more precise reporting from year to year, to be able to set precise objectives for positive change over the short, medium and long term.
